Curated archive record from NASA's 2023 historical software and automation incident catalog. NASA's catalog says an erroneous command led to a pointing error and premature loss of the Mars Global Surveyor vehicle. The catalog cautions that an incident's behavior may not mean software itself was the sole root cause. This is a public-source summary, not an independent eyewitness report.
